Trusting the Lord

As Christians, we know that trusting the Lord is important for us to live a life of complete dependence on Him. We are always reminded by the verse in Proverbs 3:5 that says. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”. Here are some things we can do to strengthen our trust in the Lord:

Accept the fact that you can’t depend on yourself

We’ve faced failures and disappointments in life that cause us to distrust other people and rely only on ourselves. But the bible teaches us a different way of living. It says in Romans 11:33, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” Every single day, although we have our own plans, we must surrender them to the Lord. His will be done in our lives all throughout our day.

Pray with all your heart

A commitment to trust the Lord is just the beginning. Real trust continues every single day, by praying with all your heart, crying out to Him, and showing that you are truly dependent on Him. It says in Psalm 55:17, “Evening, morning, and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.”

Run from evil and resist temptations

When our lives are controlled by the things of this world, our relationship with God is affected. We can’t hear His voice clearly when we keep on sinning and hurting Him. It says in 1 John 2:16, “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”

In everything you do, put God first

Putting God first in our lives can be most exemplified by the trust we give to Him in our finances. Giving Him the first part of our paycheck requires full trust. But this is a step towards making God the center of our lives and our main focus. It says in Proverbs 3: 9-10, “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine”

Fill your heart with the truth

Truth only comes from the word of God. If we truly want to be right with God, we must check our thoughts, words and actions with God’s word. It might be difficult and confusing at first. But God has His ways. When something bad happens to us or when we finally see how bad things are going in our lives, we finally admit to ourselves that we need God desperately to change. It says in Proverbs 3:11, “My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke.”
