Reading the bible is an important part of a Christian’s daily life. But why is it so important? Here are five reasons.
1. Getting to know our sovereign God
We are taught to deepen our relationship with God by getting to know Him through His words. In Ephesians 1:15 it says, “For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you when I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, will give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge of him.” Only by reading the bible are we able to understand who God really is. We are able to know His wonderful qualities that make us love, worship and revere Him all the more.
2. Understanding God’s will for our lives
We all want to do God’s will for our lives. We have peace and joy when we know that the path we’re taking is what God wants for us. In Romans 12:1-2 it says, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Only by reading God’s word will we be able to know His will for our lives. Without the bible as our guide, we’ll live our lives lost and unfulfilled.
3. Keeping us from sin
Sin is what separates us from God and we commit a sin against God when we don’t obey His laws through His words in the bible. In Psalms 119:9, it says “We should study the Bible because it guards us against sin. A pure lifestyle is consistent with His word.” If we read the bible and keep God’s laws in our hearts, we’ll live a life worthy of His love and mercy.
4. Renewing our minds
There are a lot of ideas and teachings in this world that pollute our minds and distract us. They confuse us and make us doubt what is written in the bible. In Romans 12:2 it says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” By reading the bible, we are able to align our thoughts with God’s thoughts and we are therefore able to make the right choices for our lives.
5. Making us courageous
We admire courageous men but as Christians, there is a different kind of courage expected from us. In Proverbs 28:1 it says, “The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” The courage to do what is right and to stand up for Christ is strengthened when we read the bible. God’s promise is that He will never leave us and He will fight for us.
