The moment we accept Jesus Christ in our hearts, we made the decision to follow him, making us Christ followers or Christians. But being a Christian is not the ultimate goal. More than anything else, our ultimate goal should be to become a victorious Christian. Here are five things we have to keep in mind in order for us to become victorious.
1. Use God’s word as your only guide to life
God’s word should always and only be our guide in navigating our lives on earth. It says in Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path”. All other sources of guidance may cause us to stumble or fall but the word of God is true and will lead us to eternal life with Him.
2. Making the right choices
As we go through life, we face a lot of choices and choosing the right one is important in living a joyful and peaceful life. It says in Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”. Making choices based on our own knowledge will lead to a life of unnecessary pain and misery. It is necessary to consult God through His words in each and every action or decision we intend to make.
3. Focusing on God’s vision for your life
Without God’s vision in our lives, we’ll live lost and without purpose. We’ll find ourselves without direction and easily swayed to the left and the right by the forces of this world. In the Message translation of the bible, Proverbs 29:18 says “If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; but when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.” We have to focus on God’s vision for our lives because it will show us the path we should take and the things we should leave behind as we continue to live the new life He has gifted us with the moment we accepted Christ in our hearts.
4. Taking actions on the basis of love
The central teaching of Jesus Christ is to love our God with all our hearts, soul, strength and mind, and, to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. This can be found in Luke 10:27 that says, “He answered, love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.” The bible also teaches us the kind of love we should show and share with other people. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, it says “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” This should be our only model of the kind of love we should show and share with other people.
5. Choosing the right kind of friends
As we journey through life, we meet a lot of people. In school, at work and even when we just go for a leisure trip. Although we meet different kinds of people, we should carefully choose who we want to be closed with. It says in 1 Corinthians 5:11 “But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people” We should choose our close friends wisely because they have an influence in how we live our lives.
